Obviously
biased and favours us, but a God (or Bill Nicholson watching over us) has but
something in the wind to keep the others at bay.
What
am I talking about? Arsenal being thrashed by Leicester City and United drawing
with Chelsea. Which means we are still in with a fighting chance.
Don’t
you just love to hate Arsenal and Chelsea, they are supposed to be our sworn
enemies, but here they are covering up our failures by their
incompetences. And by our failures I
mean, being beaten by West Ham, Wolves, Burnley, Southampton to name but just
4. If we had beaten them, then we would be with City and Liverpool challenging
for the title. Of course, all will be forgiven if we should lift that
magnificent UEFA Champions League trophy and or stay in the top four.
Yes,
we got a good kicking by the Ironmongers, but battered and bruised we are still
fighting on with the help of our nemesis’s fiascos’.
Our
match against the Hammers lacked spark, even though we had 63% of the
possession.
Our
long wait to play in our home was worth the wait, that was until we faced West
Ham. Three league wins and a 1-0 victory over Manchester City in the first leg
of our brilliant epic of a Champions League quarter-finals. But there were
signs that all wasn’t well when we struggled to overcome relegation-threatened
Brighton in our previous match.
Pochettino
made four changes to the side that played Brighton, but, after a good start,
the players appeared to run out of steam. They had been playing an awful lot of
games in April. Son’s low strike forced West Ham keeper Lucasz Fabianski into a
save at his near post, while a Lucas Moura shot zipped across the face of goal
before half-time. Christian Eriksen also forced Fabianski into action, this
time with his feet, but West Ham were happy to counter-attack from the outset.
Admittedly,
West Ham were the better side after the break, and the game was deep into
stoppage time when substitute Janssen almost earned us a point. So, we suffered
our first defeat by the hands of the team in 11th place. If we
manage to stay in either third or fourth place and do well in the Champions
league, then all will be forgiven. But changes will have to be made in the
summer months. We need new blood. Rumours have it that Pochettio has been given
£150 million to spend, plus whatever he sells. And yes, he will be given money,
but only the right pedigree needs to be bought in. In the past we’ve had some
donkeys. Pochettino and Levy will need eagle eyes spotting the right player to
fit into the squad.
We’ve
lost 17 games in all competitions this season, our most since 2008-09 (19), and
that isn’t good enough if we want to challenge the likes of City and Liverpool.
West
Ham who have had ups and downs this season, but managed to keep a clean sheet
for the first time in their last 10 league games since a 2-0 win at Fulham in
December. And that was down to our failings.
We
can’t do anything about the past, but we can now move on positively and beat
Ajax (twice) and Bournemouth and Everton in the league to cement our position
in the top four. Anything less will be considered a failure… and what would
that say for our hopes for next season?
