Do you remember the song “Look on the Brightside of Life?”
#Some things in life are bad,
They can really make you mad,
Other things just make you swear and curse,
When you're chewing life's gristle,
Don't grumble,
Give a whistle
And this'll help things turn out for the best.#
So, there you have it, a whistle can work wonders.
But that didn’t help Pochettino, oh, no… he was pissed off. So much so that he went for the referee and if Jesus (no, not that one, the Son of a carpenter/ the mechanic of the world, but his assistant… Even though they both had saved in their time, hadn’t pulled him off -maybe I should rephrase that! -hadn’t got between them then it could have been a whole different ball game.
The good news is that United drew with Liverpool to only give them both an extra one point each. Which means that Liverpool are only six points ahead of us, while City are only five. So we are still on for the double!
(‘Are you mad? Drugs is it?’)
A few tea sweetener supplements can go a long way… but nothing beyond that. I am an optimist, and anything is possible until it is not… including me being given a knighthood… (Pigs can fly and Arsenal do; think of flying in the Europa league to European matches… you’ve got it) so watch this space.
But that is jumping the gun, the day started off positive. We were all up for it, and if we could pull this off, and why not, and if by some miracle Liverpool dropped points as well, then there would only be a two-point gap all around, so a lot to play for.
The training went well, and we thought we could rest a few players, as the ‘hard’ job was to come a few days later.
The first half came and went, but we put up a good fight away from home and all to play for in the second half.
We walked off feeling confident, but 12 minutes into the second half and they got their kicking in first. But we had Kane, who was back in the side, and who should pop up and equalise? Yes, you guessed it, the magic footed man himself. Their goal wasn’t going to phase us now, oh no! We had a big cockerel, and that sort of symbol can make an important statement (and bring tears to your eyes). We pushed and pushed, huffed and puffed and seven minutes before the end we scored… erm… no, they scored. But with seven minutes left and four minutes added on it was enough to give the third-placed team an edge over somebody at the wrong end of the table. We pushed, and pushed and pushed and then the whistle came, and we just looked down at our hands… nothing.
We were dejected, that wasn’t how the script was supposed to go. We had 70% of the possession, six shots on goal (to their four), and all we had to show for it was null points. Couldn’t you just kick the cat down the road a bit?
But every cloud has a silver lining. Burnley had beaten all the top four teams this season, not just us, and on top of that United and Liverpool could only draw. As for the Lilywhites, it was only our second defeat in our last eight-League-games, oh, bless! As I said at the beginning, we are still in it. Six points only separate us from THEM. That is two defeats for them, two victories for us. And we can start our recovery in our next two matches, in the league, that is. Chelsea at Stamford Bridge and The Arse-wipers at Wembley.
So; have I taken you out of your misery and put optimism in its place?
For that pleasure, I don’t even charge, just from one Spurs supporter to another.
Just look at the Brightside of life, as the song says…
