TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR 2 WATFORD 0
On Monday night we faced Watford and won, but the game was a scrappy affair for all who gazed upon that match. There were many times where Watford could have come out of that game with either a point or points. Yes, we won, but we certainly weren’t Title contender quality by our performance that night by any means. In fact looking at all the other teams below City none of us was equipped to have challenged them. It was a one-horse race right from the beginning. And as for a top-four finish...?
After the second goal went in I thought our performance went up a couple of notches and that we had started to get our act together. But that notion didn’t last long and we ended up scrapping around, and when the whistle blew it was a relief to everybody that is was by two goals. Also; credit must go to Lloris who seems to have bucked up a bit (after past performances) and performed well enough to keep our challenge alive.
Watching Spurs on Monday night I didn’t feel confident that we could challenge for anything, and in actual fact, we haven’t (or not well enough), falling before we got anywhere near the last hurdle. We’ve seen this in the League Cup, Champions League, FA Cup and now we are going to fall short of number one slot (which City won comfortably). Even second position feels like miles away and if we are not careful, we could also fall short of a third or fourth spot. We’ve got it in our hands and we need to buck our ideas up.
With next season fast approaching us we need to look closely at the transfer market and what players we will need to replace those that are earmarked to go. Kane and Alli, to name but two, weren’t entirely firing on all cylinders this season. I am not suggesting that those two should go, but at the same time, the manager must know when to drop poorly performing players.
Apart from our match against WBA this Saturday, there will be another interesting match going on over this weekend. Liverpool will face Chelsea. A draw would be ideal, however, if Liverpool win and we win then that would put an eight-point gap between Chelsea and us. If Chelsea win and we win then Liverpool will leapfrog us, but we will still have a game in hand over them. So any scenario would be good for us, providing we win and we also win against Newcastle and maybe Leicester City. Not to win those games and allow Chelsea to leapfrog us will be unacceptable and a failure for us and we'll end up taking humiliation back to the new stadium. The fans are paying a fortune for their season tickets and will be up in arms if all they get in return is a second-rate position (below fourth spot). Questions marks will be directed at the Tottenham Board, and Pochettino.
The Watford match didn’t give me confidence, nevertheless, we didn’t lose, but we must show more ambition and excitement in our next games and actually look like we want UEFA Champions League football next season. Not Europa shit.
Shit happens, but to be drenched in it is unacceptable. Let us get behind the team, in return, they must show us why we are regarded as an up and coming team for the future.
