Even though we had 76% of the possession and they had an injury problem Palace wasn’t going to make it easy for us. In the first half, we missed a few chances. The second half we upped our game, but still couldn’t score. Kane missed a few chances in both halves, but then came the 88th minute and who else but Kane popped up and scored. That was all we needed, the one goal to give us three points. But come the end of the season goals could make a difference. But for now, we can celebrate. More so seeing as United beat Chelsea so that they would be below us. Liverpool and United both winning meant their positions are unaltered. Nevertheless, we are in 4th place and must make sure we don’t again fall below that position. Higher up the league table will be our target and even though we won’t be facing Liverpool or United this season again, we still have Chelsea to go.
We’ve been beaten five times this season, but four of those games were away defeats (City, Leicester City, Arsenal and United). Out of those matches, we beat Arsenal and united at our temporary home, while City and Leicester still have to come to Wembley. Our only home league defeat was against Chelsea at the very beginning of the season, and we’ve got a chance to get our revenge at Stamford Bridge, and we must take it with both fists firmly clenched.
The top five are pushing away from Arsenal (who are 10 points behind us)and the rest.
The top six League table
1. Manchester City on 72 pts. This is 13 pts above their nearest rivals in second place (United).
2. Manchester United are on 59 pts. This is only 2 pts above third place and 4 place. This makes United in easy shooting range for us.
3. Liverpool on 57pts. We won’t be facing Liverpool again (we beat and drew against them). However, they must face United and if they should win it will make the league tables look very interesting. A draw would be even better for us.
4. We are on 55 pts.
5. Chelsea are on 53 pts and we have to face them in a month's time. They beat us at home, now we must travel to Stamford Bridge and hopefully get our revenge. It will be a match both teams need to win and need to win badly.
6. It isn’t really worth mentioning 6th placing, however, as it is Arsenal and we all like a good Arsenal joke (Mind the Gap!) I have mentioned it. Arsenal are on 45 pts, this is 10 pts under us 9 pts under Chelsea. Eight points are between them and 7th placed Burnley. Eighteen points away from the relegation zone.
So there you have it. We go into March with a 4th place and plenty to fight for.
Our next home League game will be against Huddersfield on Saturday. But before that match, we face Rochdale at Wembley in our FA Cup replay match. If we get through that then we face either Wednesday or Swansea in the 6th Rd.
Wednesday 7th we get our return match against Juventus. An exciting couple of weeks for us. An exciting March.
As the games fly-by it won’t get any easier as all teams will have something to fight for; top four spot, highest spot and relegation dogfight.
A couple of years ago we were just a top-six club, occasionally dropping below that. Pochettino has turned us into a top 4 club and fighting on many fronts. We’ve only lost one League game at home this season, but our away form needs improving. Let us hope that the Palace game was the game that did that for us. It would be great if we could take something special to our new stadium (i.e. Trophy). And there are only two ways we can do that; either UEFA Champions trophy or an FA Cup trophy. It would be great if we could start the new season with something memorable, and not just entering a new and great premises.
Until we meet again, take care and look after yourselves.
