Spurs 1 C Palace 0
This was a scrappy game. A lot was expected, but little was delivered. The excuse was that we were fatigued after our marvellous win over Real Madrid. OK, I'll buy that as we won, but there was a lot of sloppy play and our best player was our stand-in goalkeeper Paulo Gazzaniga, who played a blinder and probably - in the process - claimed the No.2 spot.
Son who scored missed two blinders (but it looked like he hesitated when he was near the goal and before you knew it the ball went in a different direction). some of the passing was very sloping and missed its target.
How Zaha didn't score is beyond me. A better-informed squad would have taken the goals that Palace missed. But as I have said in previous articles it is not just about talent, but also about luck and we had the rub of the green.
Son became the highest Asian goalscorer in the Premier League.
I must also mention Chelsea; they beat United, which means we are on level points with them. Arsenal fluffed their lines and was thrashed by league leaders City; who are now eight points above second place, but there is still all to play for. Ironically enough we've got Arsenal at the Emirates in two weeks time. So we will need our wits about us, as no derby is an easy one. After that game a trip to B Dortmund and then back to face WBA in the league.
There isn't much more I can say about the Spurs/ Palace game other than we won and it is over and we survived to fight another day. The day started off early and very cold. By the time we sat down for the game the sun came out and warmed everybody up. The crowd was a good 65 thousand plus, which will be a lot more than we could get in our new stadium. Which, hopefully, means that we should fill out the new ground.
I must add that when we scored (not me personally) I jumped up and shouted: "about bloody time". I wasn't the only Spurs supporter discontent with the way played, but now that is all history.
Below is our league table. As you will see we are in third place but on the same points as United, who have a better goal difference than us. City who seem to be running away with it is eight points clear. But we've only played 11 games and there is so much to play for. We've got to face them twice and that match will be the real test our both teams title challenge capabilities.
Yours Truly, Don Scully
