Arsenal 2 Tottenham Hotspur 0

A very dull day turned into an even duller one+. I was very disappointed, as I am sure you were. Yes we lost, but I don’t feel we should have lost. Granted, we could argue the merits of their goals (through fouls) but they still won. And at the end of the day, that is what it is all about.

We were assured that Kane, Alli and Dembele were fit, but they looked anything but. And the three suspects were eventually taken off. If I was a manager I wouldn’t have played them in the first place (ok, maybe Dembele). Son has done a good job for Kane in the past and Wicks would have done the same for Alli.

Ali for me hasn’t been playing as brilliantly, as he did last season and resting him for a few games might have sent him a message that he must step-up a gear or his place might be threatened.  But none of this is going to help us at the moment.

Out of the top six clubs, we were the only ones to have lost. The gap between us and Arsenal/ Liverpool is down to one point. Chelsea leapfrogged us, thus pushing us into 4th place. So much for challenging for the title. On this form, no way. Arsenal, Chelsea and United have beaten us. Last year our performance against the top six was poor. And we mustn’t forget that when we face so-called poorer teams they held us; Bournemouth, Swansea and Burnley all got a draw. No, not good.

Pochettino needs to rethink the whole thing. Granted, we are a young side, but in the modern game we haven’t got the time and those young players will look for rich pickings if they feel they can’t immediately win things with Spurs.

But it is early days and I know Kane has said that he wants to see his days out at Spurs, but even saying that… if he got disillusioned he would also be off.
Our next league game is against West Bromwich Albion, and we need to win it or we could be looking down the wrong end of a barrel.

Pochettino needs to rethink things. But let us end on a positive note; we still have a good squad and apart from the two goals we had 58% of the possession. All the games we lost or drew against we could have easily have won them. I think we were a hairs-breath away from winning.

Two defeats in the league – in a row – doesn’t make a disaster, even though those two teams were United and Arsenal. Hold our heads up high and march onwards and upwards.

COYS!

Yours, Don Scully
