Karry Kane, the team and quality of the squad.

The question on everybody’s lips is “Will Kane play?”. Any team that is capable of challenging for the title should have a good enough squad. One man shouldn’t be the only man capable of winning it for the team. I remember watching Gascoigne playing for us and when he was in the team we were on a high, when he wasn’t we knew we were going to lose or there was a good chance we would. When you think like that there is only one outcome. But for many years – while in the Premier league – that was our thinking, a great team but poor squad. Now we are starting to build a team/ squad and can look beyond the predictable comments about our potential. We are on the march, we are capable of winning something.

So back to Kane. Last season there were occasions when we didn’t have him, but we did well. On Saturday, against United, we didn’t have him, but that shouldn’t have mattered. We had quality within the team. So the next question is; was it bad selection or that both teams were so close in quality that the outcome was just a toss of a coin?

I am going with the “toss of a coin”analogy. Look at the games we lost (let us not include West Ham, as that is another story); when facing Chelsea and United we had most of the possession and both games could have gone either way. Both games I was happy with the way we played (not the result).

Luck plays an important part in competitions. The luck of the kick/ goal, mistakes or not, etc. Look at the teams that won things and you will see that they have had some sort luck. We need that luck and the right selection. As the team and manager grows and improves things then we will get slicker and better. But this leads to another problem. Can we keep the team together? Look at United, Spurs (the 50s/ 60s) and other great teams. They needed time. Do we have it? Levy is a slick director and won’t let the players easily go, but  that could lead to a tug of war between players and the club, thus unsettling the player; whether he stays or goes.

So, back to Kane. I hope he plays, as having him in the team will unsettle the opposition, but if we don’t we have/ we should have the quality in the team to go forward, along with a little bit luck and determination. We don’t want to end up as a “nearly team”.

As a supporter and a goer since the 60's I have seen ups and downs (very low downs) but the last couple of years I have seen positiveness within our club and team. Off the pitch the new stadium and on it with the arrival of Pochettino. As the song says “things can only get better”. Let us hope so.

So Kane or no Kane we can do it. We have the quality and ability to march forward with what we've got. Believe it, we must as otherwise it is back to the drawing board and another season passes us with heads dropped and nothing in the cupboards.

Yours truly, Don Scully
