A hundred and thirty-five years ago today (5th September) the seeds of a revolution was about to take place. It was a quiet day, but a day that would never be forgotten and would eventually reverberate around the world.

The beginning and early years.

On September 1882 a group of school boys decided to create a football club for the winter months (when cricket was not played). They called that football team "Hotspur Football club," and it was formed by Robert Buckle and two of his friends. They were members of the Hotspur Cricket club.

A year had passed before deciding that they need help and contacted John Ripsher, a Bible class teacher from Hallows Church. He became the clubs first president and its treasurer. Ripsher supported the boys through the clubs growing years. He also found premises for the new club. In April of 1884, they renamed their club Tottenham Hotspur Football club (this was because their mail was being misdirected to a club called London Hotspur; they wanted to avoid further confusion).
At the beginning, the team played games between themselves and friendly matches against local clubs. On October 1885 they played their first cup competition game, and this was in the London Association Cup. They won that match. Their reputations started to grow and they started to attract a local interest and their attendance increased.
Their first league match was in 1892, in the short-lived Southern Alliance. Eighteen-ninety-five, on the 20th December, they turned professional. In the summer of 1896, they were admitted to the Division One of the Southern League. On the 2nd March 1898, the club became a limited company. They were now known as Tottenham Hotspur Football and Athletic Company.

First manager: Frank Brettell became their first manager, signing John Cameron in the process. Cameron eventually took over from Brettell, when he left a year later, but as player-manager. Cameron would have a significant impact on Spurs, winning the club its first trophy, the Southern League title. The following year, on 27 April 1901, Spurs won the FA Cup by beating Sheffield United 3-1 after a replay. Spurs became the only non-league club in football history to have won the FA Cup since the formation of the Football League (1888).
That was the beginning, the rest is history. Long live one of the world's greatest ever clubs. With a new stadium being built a new future awaits us. We have a proud history, thanks to a group of school kids; a legacy that is still growing. We not only pay tribute to this important day but a tribute to those founders. COYS!
