Spurs 1 Burnley 1 (review)

Sunday 27 August 2017

Another disappointing Sunday afternoon, the only consolation we can talk about is that we drew, rather than lost. But I certainly wouldn’t blame the Wembley turf. Again, we had most of the possession (67%) but gave it away in the last minutes of the match. To be fair on Burnley, they’ve always had a never-say-die attitude and came out fighting. Nevertheless, we need that Wembley win. Last season and this season, against Chelsea, we were the better side… of course that isn’t going to placate anybody. I was annoyed as the next man (or woman).

It was Chris Wood, their new signing, that denied us. The Burnley striker, signed from Leeds last week for £15m, came on, just in time, from their point of view (not ours, of course… Oh, no!), to do us damage.
It was a Dele Alli's strike shortly after half-time. As the final whistle loomed, that got our first goal. We had enough chances to finish off the Clarets, but our naivete proved costly when Wood’s ran on to Brady's pass in the second minute of stoppage time to sweep the ball past our Lloris.

Mauricio Pochettino was furious, as he – along with all of us – thought we had pulled off a victory.
Trippier, formerly Burnley right-back, was blameworthy in the dying minutes. We gave them too much space in the back.

As the whistle went the hoards of Tottenham Supporters mumbled their irritation and anger, as they walked away from their seats. It was one of the hottest August Sundays on record. Pochettino commented later, “We need to work hard and be more strong.  Because that is a mental problem that we need to fix.”

Our next match is away to Everton, then to home trips: Dortmund and Swansea City. There are no easy matches anymore, and until we break this so-called Wembly  Jinx every  “home” match will be critical. One win will be a relief to all.

Pochettino expects more signings before the deadline. He gave a brief debut to Davinson Sanchez, our new Colombian defender, who signed from Ajax last week. As for Harry Kane, he still hasn’t scored in August. Personally, I thought Janssen should have come on to give that bit of extra up front. Personally, I don’t think he has been given enough chances. I understand Kane is keeping him out, but when things are close at the end another striker (two up front) could make all the difference.

Now Pochettino and his team have to go back to the drawing board and implement a wake-up call/ plan. Next time, however, he will have some new signing to add to that plan. Let us hope the next time we go to our temporary him things will be a lot sweeter.

As ever; thanks to Tottenham Hotspur supporters voice Facebook page for the photos.
